Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bo Diddley and Sam Moore were among the stars who played soul and rhythm and blues at the historic Presidential Inauguration Concert for George H. Bush in 1989.
Pres. Bush passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 94 years old.
Stars of soul and rhythm and blues shone brightly at the concert following the inauguration of Pres. Bush on Jan. 21, 1989. The concert, held at the Washington Convention Center was a formal event. Ron Wood, Delbert McClinton, Joe Lewis Walker and Dr. John also performed during the gala.
A video called “A Celebration Of Blues And Soul: The 1989 Presidential Inaugural Concert,” directed by David Deutsch captures the evening.
Soul and Blues Labels Stax Records and Chess Records
The official inaugural event featured some of the most well-regarded African-American musicians of 1950s and 1960s from the labels Stax Records and Chess Records.
Sam Moore’s tribute was heartfelt as he issued a statement to the press Saturday about the passing of the former president.
“My wife Joyce and I are personally saddened by the passing of one of the most honorable decent men our country ever had serve as its President,” Moore said in a statement issued Saturday.
Sam Moore Statement: ‘God Speed, Sir’
“Our strength and comfort goes out to the entire Bush family who we’ve been fortunate to know, see and feel their collective love and admiration for Papa Bush who has now gone to join the love of his life, Barbara,” Moore added. “Rest in heaven President Bush with Mama and that beautiful little girl you two lost but never forgot, Robin. God speed sir.”
In addition to the 1989 Inaugural concert, Moore also performed at Bush and Barbara’s 50th wedding anniversary celebration, where The Oak Ridge Boys helped celebrate them, The Points of Light Kennedy Center Concert and Fundraiser and last year’s One America Appeal hurricane relief concert at Texas A and M in College Station.
