GUM, also known as Jay Watson, has released a new track with an accompanying video, “Out In The World.” It’s the first release for GUM since 2018.
“Out In The World,” is a dreamy, orchestrated trip that underscores the lonliness and isolation that can be felt from time to time.
“The song is about the feeling of wanting to give up and never talk to anyone ever again after something goes wrong,” said Watson. “It started off as a jangly 12 string folk sort of thing, before morphing into my version of Fleetwood Mac meets Cleaners From Venus. It features very little keyboard and synthesizer for me and more guitars than I’ve used in a while, it was important to have that texture.”
Jay Watson is a member of Tame Impala and POND so there is no coincidence this piece has a similar feel. The sax in the track is performed by Christian Ruggerio (Koi Child) and Laura-Lynn Petrick directed the video. The video for “Out In The World” is an analogue throwback-style piece that is not unlike some of the videos for POND and Tame Impala. There is a distinctive style to the work, which takes Watson from city to suburb with gorgeous and unusual POV shots.
GUM has released four LP’s including his 2014 debut Delorean Highway, 2015’s Glamorous Damage, 2016’s Flash In The Pan. In 2018 he released his latest full-length, The Underdog. He has performed as a special guest for Mac DeMarco, Mini Mansions and Angel Olsen
