Dermot Mulroney and his Brother Team With Pogues Founder

Dermot Mulroney’s band, Cranky George, headlined the latest installment of Mimosa Music Sundays at the Federal Bar in North Hollywood.
What started out as three — with Dermott and his brother Kieran with James Fearnley of The Pogues — has expanded to five band members. And as you might have a hint by the family name and their partner from The Pogues the band has an upbeat Irish sound.
Fearnley plays accordion, guitar, snare and melodica; Dermot Mulroney plays cello, mandolin, guitar, and cymbals; Kieran Mulroney plays violin, ukuleles, guitar and cowbell; Brad Wood plays bass, hat-box bass-drum and Sebastian Sheehan plays the drums. Check out the Cranky George Facebook Page.
It’s a fun romp through some cool songs with titles that give us a far-away, dreamlike vision, like Tunnel of Love, Perfect Skin and Waltz in Blue. But this is not the band to see if you like mellow music. Cranky George will wake you up with some fun tunes that represent a new venture into alt-Irish with a twist of folk.
Opener Matt Pond PA brought good vibes to the room with his updated folk-style tunes. He’s recorded 11 albums and has a faithful following as evidenced by the fans in the room.
