LOS ANGELES – Cherry Glazerr played in front of a sold-out hometown crowd at the Teragram Ballroom Friday night in support of their new album I Don’t Want You Anymore. Eager fans were lined up an hour before the doors opened.

The night started out with a positive reimagining of a dystopian sci-fi movie message that summarizes the plight of society. Prior to the band stepping out on stage, a proclamation came up on the stage screen in capitalized computer lettering. A portion reading, “The year is 2024. You are attending a Cherry Glazerr show. This program is designed for body and mind realignment . . . It can and will change you, if you are a willing participant . . . You will remember this night forever . . . ”

Is there a high probability that lead singer Clementine Creevy loves sci fi movies such as “Blade Runner,” “A Clockwork Orange,” and “THX 1138,” but sees an upbeat spin on the future of humanity?

The band entered the stage and launched into “Touch You With My Chaos” with the lyrics of an apology, “I just can’t forget about you. So sorry I did this. I threw you into my chaos.” The song “Told You I’d be with the Guys” got screams from the first scratchy beats. The crowd got even more wild as Creevy turned her back to the audience and sang into the microphone with limbo agility. On the stage screen, the message “You’re being awesome” flashed.

The groovy initial beats of “Ready for You” had those in the crowd dancing. For “Bad Habit,” during the lyrics “You are my eyes, I don’t need them tonight,” Creevy covered her eyes in a see no evil manner. “Juicy Socks” had the crowd singing along with “But I made an exception with him.”

Cherry Glazerr has a passionate fan base in Los Angeles that crosses generations. There were the pre-teens up in the Teragram’s VIP balcony. Teenagers with their parents in tow hung out just a few rows from the front. Passionate 20-somethings got to the front of the stage as soon as the doors opened. The millennial generation hung out at stage center. Couples in their sixties hugged the walls. They all cheered every dance move, voice squeak, and guitar shredding moment from Cheevy.

As the hour-plus long set headed towards a close, the Teragram Ballroom got into the act with “Nurse Ratched.” They blasted the lights that pumped up the crowd as the song ended in grunge fashion. A message popped up on the stage screen, “Seriously thank you for listening.” And then the band launched into their final song “Stupid Fish.” Cheevy gave a laugh as she sang “I see myself in you.” The band went into total shredding chaos before exiting stage right.

Of course, the crowd was having nothing to do with this, yelling out for an encore. The band re-entered the stage with a two song encore singing “Teenage Girl” from their first album and then closing out the night with a Nirvana cover “Territorial Pissings.” The baton was then passed over to the DJ and the crowd’s energy had many danced away until security shuffled people to the doors after a couple songs.

Out in the entryway of the venue, a long line formed that went all the way out onto the sidewalk to buy the new album and merchandise. The band’s press kit had this to say about the new album I Don’t Want You Anymore:

“This is an album that you listen to when you need catharsis. It kind of takes you through all the phases of a romantic relationship and the turmoil that comes up when you get involved with someone,” Creevy says. “I wanted to paint a picture of crawling into a safe haven where you can just float, sometimes feeling stuck and at a loss, unsure of what you want and blossoming into a unique butterfly and soaring through a swamp at dusk despite everything.”

Opening the night was WOMBO from Kentucky. Lead singer and bassist Sydney Chadwick kept those bass notes hitting and sang with that morning positivity that one gets when looking forward to the day. Guitarist Cameron Lowe had those fingers flying in rapid fashion or playing in a hypnotic style.

Drummer Joel Taylor kept the beat steady. Whenever Chadwick went wild on the strings, the crowd yelled their approval. In fact, the crowd grew louder and louder in their approval throughout the set. The band mentioned that they were playing a number of unreleased songs and those at the front had to have noticed those butterfly decorated socks.
