In the midst of all the Bruno Mars GRAMMY press — he came away with six statuettes including Album of the Year — other popular artists were overlooked by the media.
The Rolling Stones, Kraftwerk, Shakira, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Portugal. The Man and The War On Drugs also took away a GRAMMY each. And the late Carrie Fisher won a GRAMMY for spoken word.
Rolling Stones: Best Traditional Blues Album
Ironically, at a GRAMMY event that focused on injustice and racial issues, The Rolling Stones took Best Traditional Blues Album for Blue and Lonesome. Reba McEntire won Best Gospel Roots Album for Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope.
Shakira won Best Latin Pop Album for El Dorado, Ed Sheeran took Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Shape of You,” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Divide, and LCD Soundsystem won Best Dance Recording for “Tonight.”
Leonard Cohen Wins Best Rock Performance
The late Leonard Cohen earned a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for “You Want It Darker,” Lisa Loeb secured Best Childrens Album for Feel What U Feel, Foo Fighters got Best Rock Song for “Run,” and Mastodon got Best Metal Performance for “Children’s Curse.” Veteran band Kraftwerk won Best Dance/Electronic for 3-D The Catalogue.
Kendrick Lamar Got Five GRAMMYS, Mars Got Six
Kendrick Lamar took four GRAMMYS, including Best Rap Album, which apparently was not enough for his fans who cried foul because he lost Album of the Year to Mars. But Mars also beat out Jay-Z who was shut out, along with several other rappers.
Mars won the coveted Album of the Year for 24K Magic, Record of the Year for 24K Magic, Song of the Year for “That’s What I Like,” Best R and B Album, Best R and B Song and Best R and B Performance.
