Recording Academy to Address Congress on NEA

The Recording Academy released a statement regarding the White House-proposed elimination of the National Endowment of the Arts. Neil Portnow, president and CEO of The Recording Academy, said the Academy will ask Congress to keep the organization’s funding.

“Love of music and the arts brings us together, and celebrates the richness of American culture and our spirit of curiosity and creativity. Music and art serve as one of America’s greatest exports, and support jobs for creators in cities, towns and rural areas across the country.

“The White House proposal to eliminate funding for the National Endowment for the Arts is shortsighted and alarming. The modest support that we provide to music and the arts is returned many times over, whether measured in jobs and economic impact, or sheer cultural enrichment and introspection.

“The Recording Academy will ask Congress to maintain funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and renew our commitment to America’s creators.”

UMe To Release New 2-CD UB40 Recording

Ali Campbell of UB40 – Photo by Eva Rinaldi

UMe will release a two-CD package of UB40’s Greatest Hits as well as a new Unplugged Album by the UK band on Dec. 2, it was announced.

Britain’s biggest reggae band UB40, featuring singer Ali Campbell, second vocalist Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue, topped the UK singles chart on three occasions and sold 70 million records. But, in all their years of stellar success, the trio never transferred the spirit of UB40 into an acoustic setting.

Now with ‘Unplugged’ they breathe new life into an intoxicating mix of timeless covers and classic UB40 originals.

“This is the first time we’ve taken iconic UB40 tunes and done them in an acoustic style,” Campbell said. “It all sounds very fresh. It’s completely unlike anything we’ve done before.”

‘Unplugged’ offers an inventive new spin on UB40’s early gems plus the huge hits with which they later wooed the world. Among the highlights on the album is a new version of ‘I Got You Babe’, featuring Ali’s 22-year-old daughter Kaya Campbell, who sings the lines originally performed by Chrissie Hynde when the track topped the UK charts in 1985.

That pop standard is one of four number one singles on Unplugged, which also contains new takes of “(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You,” “Red Red Wine,” and a new version of “Baby Come Back” featuring Pato Banton, the Birmingham reggae star who took the song to the top of the charts with UB40 in 1994. For more information, check out the UMe website.

The British ska-style band rose to prominence in the 1980s with such hits as “Mirror In The Bathroom,” and “I Confess.”

The members of English Beat are Dave Wakeling on lead vocals and guitar; Nucci Cantrell on drums and vocals; Matt Morrish on sax and vocals; Kevin Lum on keyboards and vocals; King Schascha Toasting/ great vibes; Michael “Railo” Railton on keys and vocals and Larry Young on bass and vocals.

The Birmingham-born Wakeling and his touring band bring the sound of the original English Beat to the world as he hasn’t stopped touring for years. Wakeling also gained notoriety in the band General Public.

The English Beat toured with The Clash and The Police, which helped them catch the attention of fans in the U.S. in the 1980s who liked the new ska style.  Other bands that played to the ska beat in those days were The Specials, The Selecter and Madness.

The English Beat showed that The Clash were not the only musicians to be politically motivated in the day.  The Beat donated all the profits from their single “Stand Down Margaret” to the Committee for Nuclear Disarmament.  The band also donated its music to the anti nukes benefit album Life in The European Theatre,” and “The World of Music and Dance,” among others.

The band broke up in 1983 but soon after, Wakeling recruited guys from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, The Specials and the Clash to created General Public.

Perry revealed to fans that the Canadian singer, lyricist and performer went through surgery and six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. Fans learned of Gord’s fate via a Facebook post:

“An Important Message From The Band:

Hello friends. We have some very tough news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn’t so. A few months ago, in December, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Since then, obviously, he’s endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard. In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we’ve been standing by him. So after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hundreds of tours…

We’ve decided to do another one.

This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us…”
