Broken Social Scene Promotes ‘Let’s Try The After Vol 1 and Vol 2’

By JOHN DALY

Broken Social Scene comes to The Fonda for three nights promoting the music Let’s Try The After – Vol 1 and Let’s Try The After – Vol 2.

Tickets can still be found online.

Following the release of February’s Let’s Try The After – Vol 1, Broken Social Scene released a companion EP titled Let’s Try The After – Vol 2 which came out this month on Arts & Crafts. Listen to track “Can’t Find My Heart” HERE.

“The theme is to continue,” said Kevin Drew, co-founder of Broken Social Scene. “Sickness, suicide, uprise, love, death, betrayal, hurt, joy, sex, communication, battles and  divisions … Let’s just get to the thereafter and start building again. How do we do it within the isolation of self-prescribed empty popularity? How does the ego revolt? How does the heart win? Can it? Maybe after we will find out.”

The band members are Ohad Benchetrit; Torquil Campbell; Brendan Canning; Jason Collett; Evan Cranley; John Crossingham; Kevin Drew; Ariel Engle; Leslie Feist; Sam Goldberg Jr.; Jo-ann Goldsmith; Emily Haines; Martin Davis Kinack; Lisa Lobsinger; Adam Marvy; John McEntire; Amy Millan; David Newfeld; Andrew Neville; Julie Penner; Justin Peroff; Elizabeth Powell; Bill Priddle; James Shaw; Charles Spearin; Jason Tait and Andrew Whiteman.

Broken Social Scene says they want to be the “ideal” of music. More of a collective than a band, BSS can be 17 musicians in search of a common goal, a clearinghouse for many of Canada’s most talented musicians, or Broken Social Scene can be a small intimate group.

Broken Social Scene’s EPs, Lets Try the After Vols 1 and 2, underscore their talents. Much like the songs on Vol 1, the tracks on Vol 2 are emotional and celebrate life, complications and all and highlight the need to carry on. It’s a pop record at the heart, complete with melody and some experimentation.
