The late reviewer Dan MacIntosh and photo editor Luis Moreno of US Rocker were named finalists for the SoCal Journalism Awards, posthumously, it was announced Thursday. US Rocker was honored in five categories of the prestigious annual journalism awards.
Dan was a reviewer for US Rocker, covering a range in types of performances and recorded music. He died of a heart attack while driving home from a concert on April 6, his wife, Patricia, said. Dan’s excellent writing and distinct voice in the world of journalism earned him a finalist spot in the Criticism of Music category of the 66th SoCal Journalism Awards.
Luis earned his Group Blog honors for “Sparks and They Might Be Giants Light it Up at Hollywood Bowl,” which featured his beautiful images, and a review by Dan MacIntosh.
Luis was also named a finalist in the Entertainment Photo category for his image, “Wayne Kramer in a quiet moment on stage at one of his final performances,” portraying the late rocker Kramer who, like Luis, died of pancreatic cancer this past year.
Mimi B., creative director of US Rocker was named a finalist in two categories. Her multi-faceted work on “Elliot Easton Lets the Good Times Roll” earned her a finalist designation in the Individual Blog category and her banner redesign for US Rocker earned her a finalist spot in the Graphics category.
The work of these journalists represents the best reporting in the region out of more than 2,300 entries submitted this year. The winners will be announced at an awards dinner gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23, 2024. For tickets to the awards gala go here.
