You can believe in magic: John Sebastian will reunite with fellow The Lovin’ Spoonful members to celebrate Autism Think Tank at the Alex Theatre in Glendale on February 29.
OK so it’s not a true Lovin’ Spoonful reunion, because the co-founder of the great 1960s-70s band, Zal Yanovsky died. But in the meantime, it will be great music. This week Sebastian will reunite with former bandmates Joe Butler and Steve Boone, and they’ll all be joined by the famed Wild Honey Orchestra at The Alex.
“Since Steve, Joe and I agreed to attend, I’ve gotten correspondence about a Lovin’ Spoonful ‘reunion,’ and I want to clarify,” said Sebastian. “Spoonful reunions without Zalman (Zal) Yanovsky are more like get-togethers.”
“Most of the music at the show is played by a great assortment of studio musicians, not always including us,” he said. “It’ll be a blast but a reunion would be a misnomer.”
And besides The Lovin Spoonful get-together, additional great musicians on hand that night include Cindy Lee Berryhill; Micky Dolenz; Peter Lewis of Moby Grape; Dave Alvin; Marshall Crenshaw; Carnie Wilson and Susan Cowsill as well as a host of others.
Yanovsky, who co-founded the Lovin’ Spoonful with Sebastian, passed away more than a decade ago, in 2002. Boone and Butler joined the band in 1965. The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame-inducted classic lineup produced the singles “Do You Believe in Magic?”, “Summer in the City” and “Daydream.”
