Rock photographer Paul McAlpine presented his book “Iggy Pop Bare + Real” at Book Soup in West Hollywood and at The Haight Street Art Center in San Francisco, drawing book lovers, friends and some well-known fans.
The gorgeous work by the Boston photographer gives readers and rock photo afficionados a behind-the-scenes look at Iggy Pop’s tours of the 1980s through the lens and words of McAlpine.
Among notables on hand were Sarah Lipstate, known as Noveller, the composer-guitarist who performs on Iggy Pop’s new record, Free.
Alison Mosshart of The Kills attended the Los Angeles book signing and brought her latest work, “Car Ma,” which she traded with McAlpine for a copy of his “Iggy Pop Bare + Real.” “Car Ma” a beautiful work as well, capturing a different side of the popular musician.
McAlpine said his experiences encompass more than just getting a good show.
“BARE+REAL is also a story of friendship, passion and survival in this world we live in,” McAlpine said. “I am very thankful for my time with Iggy – the counties we visited, people we met along the way, and all the flavors of life we tasted. Live life, it’s yours”
Also in the audience was lighting master Richard Oshen, who told some interesting anecdotes about his work with the best in the music business.
A myriad Iggy Pop fans and others who love photography also sat in, many asking questions about McAlpine’s adventures, which include touring and photographing Aerosmith, The Cars, Blondie and additional rock greats.
Zoltron, the mysterious and ultra-creative artist known for cool rock artwork, was in the house at the Haight Street Art Center and presented California 88, his latest image of Iggy Pop.
