On the very first Saturday Night Live broadcast, on Oct. 11, 1975, George Carlin hosted and Billy Preston and Janice Ian were the musical guests.
Carlin laid on the audience his famous routine comparing the “toughness” of football to the “niceness” of baseball.
Preston performed “Nothing From Nothing” and Ian performed her hit of the day “At Seventeen.”

In the beginning, 44 years ago, the repertory was comprised of John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Garret Morris Laraine Newman, Michael O’Donoghue, George Coe and Gilda Radner.
