One of the more bizarre releases this week is the hilariously excellent EP White Girl Wasted by A Bunch of Jerks.
Come on, can this be real? Well the music is fast-paced punk rock with a Rock ‘N’ Roll twist, a bawdy front woman named Stabby and some impressive guitar, drum and bass work.
White Girl Wasted is a 3-song release by A Bunch of Jerks, a band out of Boston that is sure to get a warm welcome in California when things return to normal. In the meantime, this recording, released today, is definitely worth a listen and a nod.
Besides the ridiculous title track — and it’s ridiculous because this is great music that is undercut by its funny title — White Girl Wasted is joined by the tracks “Tribute” and a cover of The Rezillos’ “Flying Saucer Attack” on this Free Digital EP /download at Bandcamp.
A Bunch of Jerks are almost like The B-52’s in tone but even more campy and there’s a hint of a British accent from foxy and humorous vocalist Stabby. It’s a little embarrassing to be a “White Girl Wasted” after a couple of “peppermint shots” and a beer or two, but hopefully it’s only a phase and she’ll recover.
“Tribute” was written by Mike Howlett, who also plays guitar and sings. This is a sarcastic one, but the drumming by Ethan and bass by Bat steal the spotlight here.
“Flying Saucer Attack” is the track that gets all the attention and is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face at a time when we feel like we really are under siege from an alien. One thing is for sure: While A Bunch of Jerks are certainly no doctors, their music brings a cure for the stay-at-home blues.
