Alejandro Aranda of Pomona, Calif., covered “Yellow” by Coldplay on “American Idol” on Sunday night and nabbed a Top 20 spot in the competition.
Enamored judge Katy Perry told Aranda, also known as Scary Pool Party, that he had advanced to the top 20.
‘Come A Long Way’ Aranda Says
“I feel like I’ve come a long way since my first audition, definitely trying to be less awkward,” Aranda said. “I gave it my best and that’s all I need to do.”
Katy Perry said: “I feel like maybe you took a risk trying out for American Idol because you definitely have a different vibe. It’s not stereotypical pop stardom… Keep taking those risks because we believe in you but at some point it’s going to be out of our control.”
Perry told him he was in the Top 20.
“I don’t know how to react,” Aranda said.
Perry said: “You’re brilliant, I like that you’re a non stereotypical pop star. Can I call you a pop star? From one pop star to another, welcome to the Top 20.”
