FRIDAY 5 p.m. UPDATE: Toto dropped World Premiere cover of “Hash Pipe” by Weezer exclusively for KROQ-FM
Today Toto told DJ Ted Stryker they listened to the Weezer songs and seriously considered covering “Beverly Hills,” but opted for “Hash Pipe.” They said a neighbor told them there’s nothing like driving down the freeway with “Hash Pipe” cranked up loud.

Now thanks to KROQ-FM, there’s talk that legacy band Toto will turn the tables and cover a Weezer song.
With the success of Weezer’s cover of Toto’s “Africa,” there’s actually a chance this reciprocal relationship will continue. Especially if two Los Angeles DJs on KROQ-FM (106.7 FM) get their way.
On Wednesday, the KROQ duo of Stryker and Klein thought it would be fun to solicit the audience for ideas on which of the Weezer songs Toto should cover. The station was overrun with calls and social media suggestions from the listeners.

Then one of the listeners told the guys to look at their Twitter and lo and behold, Steve Lukather was checking in.
Lukather reached out to the station after apparently hearing what the guys were up to, so the DJs may not be too far off the scent in tracking the new Toto track.
The Weezer-Toto Connection
“Hey @KROQ and @TedStryker, we heard you talking about us on the radio. Let’s talk… soon. (DM us)”
Apparently something went down after the show went off the air, and now the station is running promos to tune in today, Friday, July 27, at 5 p.m. for some kind of information.

Weezer’s popular cover of Toto’s 1982 hit “Africa,” has been something of a phenomenon, and is the result of a fan’s request to the Rivers Cuomo led band. The fan started a social media campaign for the band to cover “Africa” after hearing the song on the show “Stranger Things.”

The Weezer version of “Africa” is true to the original, which was written by the late Jeff Porcaro and David Paich. The band also covers Toto’s “Rosanna.”
