Jeff Tweedy is exercising his “Freedom of Choice” by covering the famous Devo track of the same name. Tweedy’s latest single is part of a wide-ranging collection, “Twilight Override” due Sept. 26.

“There’s a great documentary out right now about Devo,” Tweedy said to fans via his Substack email. “It reminded me that I’ve always thought there must be some Devo song that I could turn into a folk song and sing convincingly. I’m still not sure that that’s the case, but I did try it with ‘Freedom of Choice,’ and I tried my best to make it into something that sounds natural to me.

“I love so many Devo songs,” he said. “Maybe I’ll find another one that I can try to make sense of for myself. Until then, I’ll just keep listening to Devo. And loving them so, so very much. I think that’s it.”

He added that fans will get another track off the upcoming triple album, “Twilight Override” shortly.

“It’s getting pretty close to Twilight Override time,” he said. “There’ll be another song we can hear from it soon. ‘Freedom of Choice,’ ya’ll. Carry on. OxO—Jeffy”

The new record enlists the talents of sons Spencer and Sammy Tweedy, as well as frequent collaborators James Elkington, Sima Cunningham, Macie Stewart, and Liam Kazar.
