By DAN MACINTOSH

Get ready to watch a beach town transformed into Gnarlytown.

Gnarlytown, dubbed “Bikes, Boards and Bands,” brings together extreme sports and punk rock to the Los Angeles Waterfront in San Pedro this Saturday, June 22. Rancid and Pennywise headline and local legend Mike Watt plays an early set.

Revved up motorcycles and Rock n Roll bands have always gone together especially well, and this daylong event will match roar with roar for a beautifully noisy summer’s day gathering.

Sports Extremists Travis Pastrana and Nitro Circus

Sports extremists will include Nitro Circus, featuring Travis Pastrana, while some of the best skate athletes will show off what they can do best in the anything goes, free jam of Chris Cole’s Rail Jam Invitational. Nitro Circus’s athletes will put on four separate shows during the festival. Good music and loud fans are fuel for these talented riders.

The Nitro Circus cast of athletes includes ringleader Pastrana, who will lead Nitro’s freestyle motocross crew as they throw down choreographed tricks over a 75-foot gap. The rider lineup features X Games medalists Todd Potter, Brian McCarty and Robert Haslam, plus Nitro World Games champion Gregg Duffy, as well as FMX veterans Derek Garland and James Carter.

Rancid and Skate Culture Go Together

Chris Cole’s Rail Jam Invitational will present a selection of the gnarliest skate talent from the list of Cole’s personal favorites, such as Tom Asta, Leticia Bufoni, Sean Malto and Ryan Sheckler. Cash and prizes will be awarded for the most impressive tricks.

Musically, some of contemporary punk’s finest take the stage, headlined by Pennywise (10 p.m.) and Rancid (8:30 p.m.), and also including Action Bronson (7:15 p.m.) and OFF! (6:05 p.m.), Madball (5 p.m.) and Rotting Out (4 p.m.) with early sets by Mike Watt (3 p.m.) and The Aquadolls (2 p.m.).
