Wednesday Week Reunites With Live Shows, an EP of Beloved Covers + New Video – Watch

By JOHN DALY

LOS ANGELES – Wednesday Week has released a fun cover of “They Say,” by The Zeros and it’s accompanied by a video of the reunited band as they are today.

The return of the beloved 1980s group comprised of sisters Kristi and Kelly Callan and Heidi Rodewald and David Nolte, was a seemingly sudden occurrence to longtime fans, and is a welcome relief for tired ears.

Wednesday Week’s new EP, “Souvenirs,” is produced by Don Dixon and is comprised of four cover songs the band members always loved. “Souvenirs” is the first Wednesday Week release of this century and the collection represents Sandie Shaw, The Zeros, Dolly Mixture and Color Me Gone. “Souvenirs” is released by Label 51 Recording on Oct. 23.

In the meantime, for those who were not in the clubs following Wednesday Week, the new EP is a great sampler and a fun addition to any playlist or music collection. Their music is really something to appreciate, whether we get this one EP, or more like it in the future with new, or revisited and revamped tunes.

Souvenirs by Wednesday Week out Oct 23

So the story goes, the band reunited with producer Dixon and finished “Souvenirs” days before the pandemic shutdown. The tapes sat until Label 51’s Bill Hein (formerly of Enigma) revived the project.

Recent compilations (Twisted Dream Machine, Cherry Red’s This Can’t Be Today) had already brought the catalog back around. “Souvenirs” represents the setlist Wednesday Week never got to tape the first time.

The first track released off “Souvenirs” is “Side Street Walker,” originally by Dolly Mixture, which has earned fan favorite status, as it was a well-loved live setlist staple by Wednesday Week. The group Dolly Mixture was popular in the late 1970s; they actually opened for The Undertones, from whom Wednesday Week derived their band name, off The Undertones’ song.

Additional tracks on the “Souvenirs” EP are a rocking’ rendition of the short and fast “Lose Control” by Color Me Gone and “Long Live Love” by the lovely Sandie Shaw.

Until the EP’s official release, Wednesday Week is tiding over listeners with their catchy rendition of The Zeros’ “They Say.”

The new recording enables the band members to use their guitar work and distinct voices to underscore the words The Zeros said back in the day. And, it seems, Wednesday Week wants to make it clear that things have not changed all that much on many levels.
