On his latest single, award-winning producer, singer-songwriter, composer and sound engineer Chris Birkett brings listeners to emotional high notes with “Precious Love.”
As the story goes, Birkett was performing with Buffy Sainte-Marie, at a concert at Toronto’s Massey Hall, where he met “an attractive woman with a radiant smile.” That was the one and only Joan Prowse, who had made a documentary about Sainte-Marie. There was an attraction, and a few years later, Joan and Chris decided to exchange Valentines in Paris.
It was during the second meeting, Birkett fell head over heels and he proposed to Prowse. They were married at Toronto’s Metropolitan United Church on March 21, 2013, right near Massey Hall where they met.
Now, on the 10th anniversary of the meeting in Paris, Chris releases a song he wrote about Prowse, his wife, called “Precious Love.” This is a track that can melt even the toughest of hearts.
Birkett is an award-winning producer, composer, singer-songwriter and a prolific sound engineer. Among the musicians he has worked with are Talking Heads, Bob Geldof, Midnight Runners, Sinead O’Connor and Quincy Jones.
His music is casual but intricate and his vocals bring a warm and much-welcomed familiar sound. “Precious Love” is an upbeat pop song that takes enough compelling twists and turns to hold the interest. Maybe, Birkett reassures, there really is hope for a meaningful human connection.
Birkett corrals the talents of musicians Bill King on keyboards, Gene Hardy on sax, Paul DeLong on drums, and Taylor Abrahamse who provides background vocals.
The Toronto musician admits he has made some strides in the love department and takes a fun approach with his new sounds.
“Precious Love is about how positive feelings can grow, and how love can transform people,” Birkett said. “People are precious, and relationships are the foundation of humanity.”
