The influential women of the band Bikini Kill announced they will reunite to play a few shows this spring in Los Angeles and New York City.
Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox, Tobi Vail and Erica Dawn Lyle will put on their first shows since 1997 in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium and in New York at Brooklyn Steel and Terminal 5.
Bikini Kill went beyond music, influencing the independent publishing world with a creative zine aimed at empowering women and girls.
Bikini Kill and the Riot Grrrl Movement
The 1996 album Reject All American was their last. Bikini Kill is credited with starting the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 1990s with their political lyrics, zines and live show. Bikini Kill, which started touring in 1991 was popular, playing dates in the U.S. but also touring Europe, Australia and Japan.
Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape, two EP’s, two LP’s and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD. Bikini Kill inspired with their belief that if all girls started bands, the world would change. They encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance.
The Singles (1998) was reissued on vinyl last year.
