Kinman’s ‘Dark American Night’ Gets USC Archive Boost

Legendary SoCal punker Chip Kinman and his band Ford Madox Ford premiere a new film assembled from rare vintage footage to accompany their song “Dark American Night.”
“Dark American Night” is off the new FDMDXFD album, This American Blues, available now.

The Jackie Sharp USC Collection
The short film is comprised of quick cuts of mixed images by Jackie Sharp dating back to 1988. Through use of shots mainly taken in Santa Monica, the film is designed to elicit a range of emotions evoked by nostalgic symbols of American society. It is Sharp’s interpretation of the FDMDXFD song “Dark American Night.”
SoCal cars, beaches and babes of 1988 are set against images of tarnished symbols of yesteryear representing broken dreams and aspirations. The shots in the film were assembled by Sharp and Dino Everett. The images are from the Jackie Sharp Collection at USC’s Hugh Hefner Moving Image Archive at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
Kinman: ‘No One is Listening’
“It’s a 30-year juxtaposition and the song speaks to the fact that no one is listening,” Kinman said. “No one is listening to the kids.”

“Dark American Night,” is from the album This American Blues by FDMDXFD available now. FDMDXFD, comprised of Dewey Peek, S. Scott Aguero and Matt Littlell have some upcoming dates including an opening spot for Dream Syndicate at The Troubadour on April 20, getting in a quick set at Spin Records in Kinman’s native Carlsbad, Calif. on April 21 and rejoining The Dream Syndicate at the Casbah in San Diego that same night.
