Thomas Dolby is taking a break from academia for a short summer tour with a stop tonight, Wednesday, July 25, at the Largo at the Coronet.
Dolby, the renowned musician and director, who most recently has been a professor of music at Johns Hopkins University, will take time out for additional shows and a tour to promote his new greatest hits collection and his memoir.
Dolby will play music and tell tales during the Largo show called “An Evening of Music and Storytelling With Thomas Dolby.” He will do a live stream mini-concert for Roland on Thursday, July 26, and he will play the Microsoft Theatre for “’80s Weekend” supporting Blondie. The Largo show is sold out.
Dolby is releasing a 2-CD greatest hits collection called Hyperactive on Friday, July 27. The release is part of BMG’s Masters Collection series.
During the Largo show. Dolby will ask audience members to select songs from his vast catalog of songs from more than his 30 years of music. He will tell a story about the song and will accompany with personal photos projected on a screen behind him.
Thomas Dolby The Master of Sound
In addition to the writing the songs “She Blinded Me With Science,” “Hyperactive,” and others, Dolby has also produced the music of others, including such luminaries as David Bowie, Foreigner, Def Leppard, Stevie Wonder and Roger Waters.
Dolby had a best seller with his memoir, “The Speed of Sound,” released in 2016.
“These shows will give me an opportunity to expand on some of the stories in my book — without pulling any punches,” Dolby said. “I’ll be unstitching the songs, as I’ve found audiences love to get a peek ‘under the hood’ and into an artist’s creative methods.”
Dolby also do a live stream on Thursday, July 26 as part of a demonstration of the Roland Cloud. Free and open to all, the performance by electronic music icon and Roland Lifetime Achievement Award winner Dolby will take place on at 4 P.M. PDT, in Roland Cloud.
Dolby will also be performing at 80s weekend at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown LA on Friday night.
