Jail Guitar Doors Returns to Ford Theatres on Sept. 9
Wayne Kramer has invited an impressive lineup of musicians for Jail Guitar Doors’ ROCK OUT! 3, which will be held at the Ford Theatres on Friday, Sept. 9.
Featured performers are Don Was; Marshall Crenshaw; Jill Sobule; Keith Morris of Black Flag; Jason Heath And The Greedy Souls; The Wild Reeds; and special surprise guests.
In 2009, musicians/activists Kramer and Billy Bragg joined forces to create Jail Guitar Doors USA, which organizes prison outreach programs and advances new solutions to diminish prison violence. JGD-USA works for justice and prison reform in the United States while partnering with social service groups to help people in prison reconnect with the outside world.
Jail Guitar Doors has been on the front line lobbying against unjust lengthy prison sentences, the privatization of prisons for profit, and actively seeking to restore humanity in a forgotten segment of our citizens: Those incarcerated. From 1980 to 2008, the number of people incarcerated in America quadrupled, skyrocketing from roughly 500,000, to 2.3 million, according to the US Bureau of Statistics.
Jail Guitar Doors is a California non-profit organization that provides musical instruments and opportunities to help rehabilitate prisoners. In 1977, punk rockers The Clash, recorded “Jail Guitar Doors,” a song detailing the imprisonment of their hero and fellow musician, MC5’s Kramer.
