Weezer is enjoying its first megahit on the charts in years with Toto’s “Africa,” and during the first of their shows at The Forum, the band brought out another blast from the past: “Weird Al” Yankovic.
“We’re gonna take you on a distant voyage, to the continent of your choosing,” said Rivers Cuomo to the packed audience in Inglewood, California. “Where do you kids want to go tonight?”
The crowd called out, and Cuomo repeated the most anticipated word of the night: “Africa!”
Weezer started in with the hit song, with Cuomo carrying the lead vocal and main harmony in the chorus. He got plenty of help from the thousands of fans singing along.
But just in time for the trademark synth keyboard solo, another 1980s treasure was introduced by the Weezer frontman: “Weird Al” Yankovic, playing his accordion.
Weezer’s tour with The Pixies moves to San Diego Aug. 11 and wraps in Phoenix on Aug. 12.
