Bon Jovi and the Moody Blues jumped way out in front on the last day of fan voting for the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.

With 1.1 million fan votes, Bon Jovi tops the Moody Blues, who are in second place so far with 930,187 votes; Dire Straits is in third place in the fan voting with 604,482 tallies.

But of course, this is not a vote that rests solely in the hands of the fans.

Current standings in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame fan vote as of Tuesday morning

How It Works

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Nominating Committee selects the group of musicians nominated. Ballots are sent to roughly 900 members of the music business, musicians and historians, as well as all living Rock Hall inductees. The five performers who get the most votes are in the induction class.

The top five vote-getters in the public poll form one ballot, which is weighted the same as the rest of the submitted ballots.

The artists — performers, composers and/or musicians — are eligible to be inducted 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording. Inductees will have had a “significant impact on the development, evolution and preservation of Rock and Roll,” according to the Hall of Fame.  There are several categories:

Performers

This category honors bands or solo artists which demonstrate musical excellence. Such a descriptor includes (but isn’t limited to) influence on other performers or genres; length and depth of career and catalog; stylistic innovations; or superior technique and skills.

Ahmet Ertegun Award

This award (which was formerly known as the non-performer category) honors songwriters, producers, disc jockeys, record executives, journalists and other industry professionals who have had a major influence on rock and roll.

Early Influences

These artists pre-date the birth of Rock and Roll, but have had a profound impact on music’s evolution and its iconic artists.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Musical Excellence

This award honors performers, songwriters and producers who have changed the course of music history. These artists have dedicated their lives to creating influential, important music infused with originality, and have achieved a level of timeless distinction.

It’s not too late to cast a vote.  The deadline for fan voting is Dec. 5.
