Melvins Release New Album Friday, Launch Tour April 26 in San Diego

The Melvins are set to drop a new album on Friday and have lined up dates for their 10-week tour, which kicks off at The Casbah in San Diego on April 26.

The new record, called Pinkus Abortion Technician (Ipecac Recordings) features both ongoing Melvins’ bass player Steven McDonald (Redd Kross, OFF!) and Jeff Pinkus, bassist from the Butthole Surfers.

“With our upcoming release, we double your bass player with Steven McDonald and Jeff Pinkus holding down the bottom,” Dale Crover said. “It’s an experiment in the low end of the aural spectrum where we asked ourselves, ‘Would it work?’ ‘Could it work??’ ‘Should it work???’ The answers were yes, yes and YES!”

“We’ve never had two bass players,” said Buzz Osborne.”We’ve had two drummers and two guitar players so it makes total sense to now have two bass players. I like Steven and Jeff a great deal. I admire their bass playing and singing and both of them can grill a mean steak.”

‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’

On the record, which will appeal to Melvins lovers for its powerful guitar and huge bass, there are some notable tunes. “Stop Moving To Florida” is a medley of the James Gang’s “Stop” and Butthole Surfers’ “Moving To Florida.” Also on the album, the band covers the Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and Butthole Surfers’ “Graveyard.”

The Melvins embark on a 10-week North American tour, launching April 26 at the Casbah in San Diego. The tour will feature the Melvins as a four-piece with both Pinkus and McDonald joining Osborne and Crover.
