VIDEO: Mary J. Blige, Diane Warren, Sufjan Stevens Nab Oscar Noms

Of all the Oscar contenders announced today, the nominations in the Original Song category could be the most interesting, pitting a pop music veteran against an R and B queen and revered alternative artist. Mary J. Blige gets a nod for her work on “Mighty River,” music veteran songwriter Diane Warren takes a bow for “Stand Up for Something,” and Sufjan Stevens takes the credit for “Mystery of Love.”

Oscar Nods: Mighty River

“Mighty River” for the film Mudbound was written and is performed by Mary J Blige and was co-written by Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson. Blige is also up for a Supporting Actress award for her role in Mudbound.

Stand Up For Something

“Stand Up For Something” (“Marshall”) The original song was written for Marshall by GRAMMY, Emmy, and Golden Globe Award-winning and eight-time Academy Award-nominated legend Diane Warren and Lonnie R. Lynn Academy Award and performed GRAMMY Award-winning hip-hop icon and actor Common.

Warren appeared to have an early morning nomination party with pals, posting a video on Instagram and saying “Let’s get nominated for another f***ing Oscar!”  The nomination is her ninth.

“Mystery of Love” for Call Me by Your Name by Sufjan Stevens

 

Remember Me

“Remember Me” for the film Coco was written by the veteran couple Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez who have a knack for writing music that drives the story. The song is performed by Miguel and Natalia LaFourcade:

This Is Me

“This Is Me”  for The Greatest Showman was written by Oscar and Tony winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul  (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) and is performed by Keala Settle.
